Abstract

Selective Domino Propagation in Radical Copolymerization for Precision Control

◆Research Summary:
The synthesis of multiple controlled polymers in terms of molecular weight, stereoregularity, monomer sequence, etc. is one of the ultimate goals in polymer chemistry. To attain this goal, it is necessary to develop hybrid catalytic systems that may work concertedly or independently to enable the simultaneous controls not only via catalytic sites but also via weak interactions.
This study is mainly directed to developments of selective domino propagation for generating specific monomer sequences in radical copolymerization of polar acrylic monomers and non-polar olefins with naturally-occurring characteristic structures using weak interactions via hydrogen-bonding and coordination of solvents and catalysts to the propagating species. In addition, multiple precision controls of monomer sequence and molecular weight are investigated using hybrid catalytic systems via combination of domino propagation and living radical polymerization toward high-performance and functional polymeric materials based on the multiple controlled polymer structures.
